Lesson 1: Question 4

Am I willing to expand my vocabulary of liberty and learning?

The word study on Liberty and Learning took me in an unexpected direction. I try to avoid the pitfall of thinking I know what words mean, and look them up as though it were the first time. The Holy Spirit loves to play this game and always rewards me with blessed nuggets.

To learn is "to acquire knowledge or ideas of something before unknown; to receive knowledge or instruction." (Noah Websters 1828)

In order for this to happen, we must have a teacher, but "How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not bleieved? And how shall they believe in Him in whom they have not heard? An how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach except they be sent?" Romans 10:14-15

We have been called to be good stewards of our children. God gave them to us that we would "raise them up in the way they should go." In order to do this, we must first be set free (Galatians 5:1), and then by our reason of use (Hebrews 5:14), we teach them so that one day they would get off the milk and onto the meat.

The end of all wisdom and knowledge is to walk in an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ, "that every knee would bow and every tongue confess Jesus as Lord." (Ro 14:11)and to teach our children to do the same. We have been given a choice through the principle of free will, but do you really think it is an option? If we have said "YES" to Jesus, that also included our humble submission to learn and teach LIBERTY in Christ, that we may "know the truth and the truth would make us free." (John 8)

I think it's a choice in the sense that we can choose to do right or choose to do wrong. If we don't choose to follow through with our children, God does hold us responsible for the consequences of our choices.

The Hebrews ignored the encouragement from Joshua and Caleb to go in and take the land. In fact, they almost stoned them to death for even suggesting it. God still carried out his purposes through Joshua, but did so much later and all those people who denied God's power in that circumstance died in the desert.

There are many, even in the homeschooling community, that want to take the easy way out in educating their children. You would be amazed to know how many tell me they don't have the time to learn in this way. It's a 'just get it done' mentality.

There are very few who will make the choice to follow God deeply in the education of their children. I'm glad you are one of them, Danika.

We need to not allow our own feelings of inadequacy, feelings of panic over a lack of time, fears over what we don't know take control over what we should be doing in a peaceful, step-by-step process.

Thank you for your encouragement, Michelle. I am finding this study so rich because I am raising the bar for myself, that those I mentor may rise to the challenge. Your blog has been very helpful and inspirational in keeping me accountable to not skip steps or be satisfied with mediocrity!
